Foods that can help Prevent Cancer

Cancer, also known as malignant tumour or malignant neoplasm, is a group of disease involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. The chances of developing cancer can be reduced by choosing the right kind of food. Here are top five foods to reduce cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale contain specific phytonutrients that have been shown to help reduce the risk of developing hormonal cancers. Eating 3 servings of these vegetables per week helps to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 41%. Eating 1 serving per day can reduce the risk of breast cancer by almost 50%. These vegetables also contain folate, which is a B vitamin that strengthens the DNA to prevent further damages.

Flax seeds Flax seeds

Flax seeds contain the highest amount of phytoestrogen and can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 44%. Researchers have also found that men who consume flax seeds can either reduce or prevent tumour growth.  Taking 2 tablespoons per day of flax seeds can greatly reduce the risk of developing these cancers.

It contains high levels of polyphenols that can protect the body from developing breast or prostate cancer. Research shows that people who consumed a diet rich in olive oil reduced their risk of developing cancer.

 

 

Salmon Fatty fish

Fatty fishes such as salmon, tuna and mackerel contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which decrease inflammation in the body. Studies have found that women who took fish oil supplements lowered their chances of developing breast cancer by 32%. The recommended dose is two 3.5oz servings of fatty fish per week.

Tomatoes Tomatoes

They are rich in carotenoid lycopene, and is a very powerful antioxidant that can help fight against prostate cancer. Studies have found that men who ate both raw and cooked tomatoes developed protection against the disease. In another study, women who ate 3 servings of fruits/vegetables per day including tomatoes reduced their risk of developing breast cancer.
